ResumoThe short filament carburization time is desirable to reach quickly diamond growth conditions and avoid other materials deposition. In addition, high nucleation densities are important to assure adhesion of obtained diamond films for using in tools as thin and super hard coating, with low friction coefficient. The methane concentration has varied to observe its influence on filaments carburization time during the first steps of diamond growth by Hot Filament assisted Chemical Vapor Deposition (HFCVD) technique. The effect of DC bias voltage between filaments and substrate on carburization and its influence on diamond grains density and quality has also verified on molybdenum substrates by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and micro-Raman spectroscopy. All samples surfaces were prepared by ultrasonification in methanol bath with diamond grains of 0.250 ìm. The experiments were performed using methane concentrations from 0.5 to 6% v.v with 100 V applied to single-bias circuit. The results show that the carburization time is highly dependent on the methane concentration and the bias increases the grain growth and/or the renucleation rate but not the nuclei density. However, in comparison to works with molybdenum and bias in microwave plasma [1] and HFCVD [2], the bias absence resulted in higher nucleation densities by one and three order of magnitude, respectively.
